Before the hard freeze, locate your meter and find your isolation valves so you can shut your water off in the case of a leak. Keep the lid on your meter box closed to help protect the meter from freezing conditions. Insulating your meter box with old towels, feed sacks, etc. is permitted, but you must remove the insulation as soon as freezing conditions pass to avoid meter damage and meter communication failures.
During and after a hard freeze, when safe to do so, check the meters of elderly neighbors and unoccupied properties (deer leases, vacation rentals, churches, etc.) for leaks. If all fixtures are off but the small red dial is still turning in a clockwise direction, there is a leak somewhere downstream of the meter. Leaks at churches and vacant meters were the primary source of outages for Consolidated members during Winter Storm Uri. Failure to find and isolate leaks can cause localized water outages, property damage and very high water bills.
Outage Reporting: During severe winter weather, system pressures may be reduced proactively to conserve water or inadvertently due to increased customer demand from running faucets, customer leaks, or system leaks. We anticipate increased call volume during this time. If you experience a water outage, first check your meter for a clockwise-spinning red dial indicating a leak on your side. If that is not the cause, systematically check the different fixtures of your home to determine if a section of your plumbing has frozen. Check with neighbors to see if the problem is isolated to your plumbing. If the problem is not on your side of the meter, call the main office at 936-544-2986 to report an outage. This number is monitored 24/7 by system staff or an after-hours answering service.
If our primary phone system is affected by a storm, we will update the website with a back-up communication method and relevant news as it becomes available. Safe drinking water rules require that we issue precautionary boil water notices under certain conditions, including system outages and very low system pressures. Customers in the following areas no longer need to boil their water. This area includes FM 227 between Darling Ingredients and CR 1850, as well as customers on CR 1850, 1840, 1620, 1640, FM 2423, PR 6035, Hwy 287 from CR 1840 headed South for 2 miles, and FM 2022 from the intersection with FM 2423 going North for 1 mile. All samples were clear.
